31 December 2020 - 99 books out of 100

Before the pandemic, my plan this year was to finish up some series that I've started over the last 12 years. Anything before that it is time to start from the beginning. Lyonesse, Dream Park, Crystal Singer and the Lady Astronaut are finished, and I called it quits on Spellsinger. I made progress on a few other series which I should be able to finish in 2021.

According to goodreads I read 32,100 pages in 2020 over 99 books, just 88 pages per day. All those numbers are down from previous years; in a time of less travel and fewer social engagements, I ended up reading less. I didn't watch much television or movies either, and very much miss spending time in a theater. I also worked considerably fewer baseball games. The photo above is from the one summer trip I was able to take; it shows the lonely full moon setting over the Columbia River.

As far as I can see, my time went instead to work. I'm grateful I can work from home, and the company is doing well, but clearly I am overdoing it. Therefore my theme for 2021 is to improve work-life balance.

Back to the stats - the oldest book I read this year was also the first I complete - The Invisible Man (1897). The most recently published book was Ready Player Two (November of 2020). Of the 99 books I read, 38 were non-fiction, 61 fiction books with 26 from fiction series - about the same as previous years. My non-fiction reading covered the Dewey decimals pretty well, though I read nothing from the 200s (religion) or 400s (language). My average rating was 3.59, with only a single one star book.

17 of the 99 books read were rated at 4.5 or higher stars out of 5. My favorite from fiction was A Gentleman in Moscow, and my favorite from non-fiction was God, War, and Providence.
