31 December 2019 - 100 books in 2019
My goal in 2019 was to read a good chunk of the books on my "to be read" shelf, which had nearly 200 books (fiction and non-fiction) at the start of 2019. I read 57 of those, and abandoned another 4. Of course, I added a few also, but the list currently weighs in at only 144. Goal achieved!
According to goodreads I read 33,383 pages in 2019. This is roughly 334 pages per book, or 91 pages per day. The oldest book I read this year was also the first I completed - The Flood by Emile Zola (1880). The most recently published was How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems by XKCD artist Randall Munroe (September 2019).
Of the 100 books read, 57 were fiction (including series and anthologies) and 43 were non fiction books. According to the Dewey Decimal system, my non-fiction reading was from:
- 000 Information & general works (1 book)
- 100 Philosophy and psychology (2 books)
- 300 Social sciences (11 books)
- 500 Science and mathematics (8 books)
- 600 Technology (6 books)
- 700 Arts and recreation (4 books)
- 900 History and geography (7 books)
- Biography (2 books)
16 of those 100 books earned a 5 star rating. My favorite fiction book was probably True Grit, and my favorite non-fiction was Underland. Both are highly recommended!
In the past 11 years on goodreads, I have started 36 different series. Some this year, because the first book was on my reading list. My goal for 2020 is to finish some of those series and cut that list down before starting any new ones.
