31 December 2018 - 102 books in 2018

Another year, more travels, both for work and pleasure. The bucket list item this year was my first visit to London. Among items seen there were the Elgin Marbles (pictured above).

The oldest book I read this year was A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain (1889). The most recently published book read this year was Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down: The Official Behind-the-Scenes Companion by Gina McIntyre (October 30, 2018).

Of the 102 books read, 65 were fiction (including series and anthologies) and 37 were non fiction books. According to the Dewey Decimal system, my non-fiction reading was from:

  • 000 Information & general works (1 book)
  • 300 Social sciences (7 books)
  • 500 Science and mathematics (5 books)
  • 600 Technology (6 books)
  • 700 Arts and recreation (11 books, 10 from 79x - Performing Arts)
  • 900 History and geography (1 book)
  • Biography (6 books).

15 of those 102 books earned a 5 star rating. My favorite fiction book was probably The Lathe of Heaven and my favorite non-fiction was likely The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine who Outwitted America's Enemies. Both are highly recommended!

According to goodreads I read 33,415 pages in 2018. This is roughly 325 pages per book, or 91 pages per day. Over the last ten years, I've built up a backlog of books tagged "to be read" on that website - 99 fiction and 100 non fiction. My reading goal in 2019 is to put a serious dent in that list, finishing the year with no more than 150 books in total, and then 2020 with less than 100.
