31 December 2014 - 101 books read in 2014

(editor’s note - man, facebook pulled the trigger fast on notes. This was tough to find! There will be 5 more of these “throwback” posts in the next few weeks)

This was a busy year, and I had to hustle to make my goal of 100 books towards the end. I challenged myself to finish off some of the larger books on my reading list, and completed 8 of 600 or more pages - the longest being Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon at over 1000 pages. I also took on three challenges at the Worlds Without End science fiction list group:

  • Read 12 books by authors I haven’t read in the Grand Masters of Science Fiction and Horror lists
  • Read 12 books in the Young Adult Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror genres
  • Read 12 books from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Masterworks releases

The overall results of my sixth year of reading on goodreads were 62 fiction books, of which 21 were series fiction. I read 38 non fiction books. Using Dewey Decimal (because that’s what the local libraries use), these were from:

  • 0 000 Information & general works
  • 1 100 Philosophy and psychology
  • 2 200 Religion
  • 4 300 Social sciences
  • 0 400 Language
  • 8 500 Science and mathematics
  • 7 600 Technology
  • 6 700 Arts and recreation (4 from 79x - Performing Arts)
  • 0 800 Literature
  • 5 900 History, geography
  • 5 Biography

The earliest published book I read this year was A Voyage to Arcturus (1920). The most recently published book read this year was What If? (September 2 2014).

Finally, according to goodreads I read 32874 pages in 2014. That works out to an average of 325 pages per book, and just over 90 pages per day. Whew!
