All These Great Answers - Kyle Sevenoaks
We caught up with Kyle as he gets ready to showcase his first short film ‘Taste In Music’ to the Ramaskirk Film Festival this October…
This is your first short film, tell us about it?
This film asks the question “what would you do if your trusty faithful musical keyboard came to life and tried to eat you?” We did our best to write an entertaining short that pays homage to our favorite era of horror while also doing what we do best, laugh at ourselves.
What made you want to tell this story?
We were talking amongst ourselves and came up with the premise of a cosmic storm hitting earth and affecting various electronic devices. Being musicians we naturally gravitated towards the keyboard and knew it had to be our antagonist.
As a musician, how did music play into the making of this film?
From the first moments of conceiving the film I had strong ideas for the character themes and how they'd play off each other for the score, a large part of the pacing of the film was inspired by songwriting techniques, having energetic moments interspersed with calmer moments to keep it interesting.
What were your visual references for the film?
Which films and filmmakers have inspired you?
There are many influences I have but for this one specifically I'd have to lean heavily on Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson for the early 80s aesthetic, as well as being able to not take ourselves too seriously and have a good laugh in between all the gore.
Congratulations on making it into Ravenheart! How was the experience for you?
Thanks! Ravenheart was a first class festival experience, being able to introduce the dark comedy block of films as well as meet new and inspiring young filmmakers was as excellent as it can get. Having the chance to see Total Recall on 35mm was fantastic.
My praises to Adam, Kay and the other members for making us feel welcome and accepted for four days in a row.
What’s next for you?
Right now I'm writing a script based on an already completed short, expanding it to become a feature. It's already garnered high praise from some industry professionals and I hope to begin shooting very soon.
