Autopsy No. 03 — a belief about your body your dermatologist buried before you were born.

Last week the belief sent you an invoice. This week, one that costs you nothing and is just as wrong — and unlike the others, you can run the test yourself with a razor, one leg, and four weeks of honest attention.

THE BODY "Shave it and it grows back thicker and darker."
Everyone has been warned. Shave your legs, your face, your arms, and the hair returns coarser, darker, faster — as if the razor insults the follicle and the follicle retaliates. It is the reason teenagers are told not to start shaving too early, the reason people leave hair unshaved they'd rather remove, the reason the razor feels like a decision with consequences. And the best part, the part that makes it so hard to kill: you have seen it. You shaved, it grew back stubbly and dark, you felt it with your own hand. Case closed. Except that hand is the murder weapon.
BROUGHT IN BY A mother, a locker room, an older sibling with authority and no data. Handed down as bodily folklore in every country that owns a razor. It survives not on evidence but on demonstration — everyone thinks they've personally confirmed it, which is exactly why nobody checks.
TIME OF DEATH 1928. This belief has been in the ground for the better part of a century — buried by the first researcher who bothered to measure instead of glance. It was reburied in 1970, more carefully. You were, in all likelihood, not yet born either time. First, its strongest case, because I don't kill strawmen.
THE STEELMAN (at full strength — this is the honest case FOR)
This is not a stupid belief, and the people who hold it are not careless — they are, if anything, too empirical. They did the thing we always beg people to do: they observed. They shaved, and the regrowth genuinely felt coarser under the fingertips and looked darker against the skin. That is a real observation, reported consistently by millions of people across every culture, on every part of the body. When that many careful witnesses independently report the same sensation, dismissing them outright is the arrogant move, not the scientific one.
And a mechanism suggests itself readily. The body is responsive — muscles thicken under load, skin calluses under friction. Why not hair under the blade? It is not absurd to imagine the follicle treating repeated cutting as a signal to grow back stronger. The belief is observation plus a plausible biological story. That is usually how true things look.
So we have a real, repeatable sensory report wearing a false explanation. Now the test — and this is the rare belief where the test is almost insultingly easy to run.
THE AUTOPSY
Exhibit A — shave one leg, not the other. This is not a thought experiment; dermatologists actually did it. In a controlled study, researchers had participants shave designated areas on a schedule while leaving matched areas untouched, then measured the regrowth directly — its width, its rate of growth, its coarseness. The shaved hair came back no thicker, no darker, and no faster than the hair that was never touched. The follicle sits well below the skin; a blade travelling across the surface never reaches it, and cannot send it a message it has no way to receive. What grows is determined underground, by genes and hormones, and the razor is a strictly above-ground event. [1]
Exhibit B — so why did your own hand disagree? Here is where the autopsy stops being about hair and becomes about perception. An uncut hair grows from the follicle and tapers to a fine, soft point at the tip — that taper is the natural end of a hair. Shave it, and you slice that hair off flat, leaving a blunt, squared-off stub instead of a fine point. A blunt tip feels coarse and bristly against the fingertips where a tapered one felt soft — so the regrowth feels thicker without being thicker. And it looks darker for two reasons: the flat cut end presents a wider face of pigment than a fine point does, and fresh short regrowth hasn't yet been lightened by weeks of sun and weather the way your longer hair was. Let it grow out, and it tapers, lightens, and softens back to exactly what it was. You weren't measuring your hair. You were feeling a cut edge and calling it growth. [1][3]
Exhibit C — the myth was already dead when your parents taught it to you. This isn't a recent finding that hasn't trickled down. The first study measuring shaved versus unshaved hair and finding no effect was published in 1928. The careful controlled version followed in 1970. And in 2007 a review in the BMJ listed "shaving makes hair grow back faster, darker or coarser" among a handful of medical beliefs that are flatly, evidentially false yet held even by physicians — noting the same culprit every time: strong evidence on one side, and a persistent optical-and-tactile illusion on the other. The people who study hair for a living have not believed this in living memory. The belief survives entirely on the daily testimony of people mistaking a blunt tip for biology. [2][3]
CAUSE OF DEATH A sensation mistaken for a measurement. Cutting a hair changes the shape of its tip, not the behaviour of its root — but the tip is the part you can feel and see, so the tip is what gives evidence, and the evidence is a forgery. The murder weapon was your own fingertip, trusted over a ruler. The belief is a near-perfect closed loop: the razor creates the very sensation that seems to confirm the razor's power.
VERDICT

FALSIFIED.
What survives, honestly stated: the regrowth really does feel coarser and look darker for a while — that observation was never wrong, and I won't pretend the witnesses imagined it. But the claim built on top of it — that shaving changes what the follicle produces, making hair permanently thicker, darker, or faster — is false, and has been demonstrably false since before nearly anyone reading this drew breath. Your hair returns exactly as it left. You simply felt the cut where it happened.
THE LEDGER Entry 003 — "Shaving makes hair grow back thicker and darker." Status: FALSIFIED. Cause of death: a blunt tip mistaken for a changed follicle. Beliefs that turned out to be about the believer, not the world: 2. Running total opened: 3.
This week's job: take one thing you "know" because you saw it with your own eyes, and ask what it would look like if it were an artefact of how you looked, not what was there.
