How you going? Good, I hope. As we stand on the cusp of July, I'm dreaming of the intense solar energy we'll (hopefully) be enjoying in the coming weeks. So, let's make damn good use of it!
This month's offering is a solar flare writing ritual — a little something something to help you burn through creative blocks and shine a light on the dormant story ideas that are begging to be explored.
When you're ready, we shall begin! 👏
July solar flare writing ritual
Perform between 11am-2pm when the sun is strongest.
What you'll need:
- A gold or orange candle (I love to use small spell candles for this kinda thing, but a birthday candle works, too!)
- Your favourite notebook
- Your favourite pen/pencil
- A timer for 7 minutes
- Optional: citrine, sunstone, or clear quartz
Method:
2) Light your candle (and hold your gemstone, if using) and take three deep breaths, imagining golden light filling your lungs.
3) Hold your hands around (not over) the flame and speak your intention:
"Solar fire, creative flame, wake the stories without name. Through my pen, let passion flow, set my sleeping words aglow."
4) Write at the top of your paper: "What wants to burn bright in my writing?"
5) Set a timer for 7 (in honour of the month) minutes and write continuously—no stopping, no editing. If you get stuck, write "I am burning through this block" until new words come.
6) When the timer ends, circle any words or phrases that feel particularly charged. These are your "solar flares" — the seeds of stories or ideas that want to emerge.
7) Close by thanking the sun's energy and safely snuffing your candle.
