Reading the future 📖
Hey peach,
How’s life? You getting on okay?
I’ve got a fun treat planned for you today. I was planning to tell you next month, but I shifted it forward, so you’ll have time to toy with it while conditions are optimal.
I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s rewind, shall we?
As you know, Halloween (or Samhain) is right around the corner. It’s a time of the year when the ‘veil’ between the living and the dead is thin. It’s a fantastic time for what we witches call ‘divination’ — using tools like crystal balls, tarot cards, runes, scrying mirrors, etc., to peer into the future.
And the good news is, you don’t need to head out to your local metaphysical store to buy any of that fancy stuff. You can take advantage of October’s excellent divination energy using something I bet you have within arms reach as we speak.
Books, my friend!
I’m talking about the age-old practice of bibliomancy — the art of divining the future using books. Authors like Jules Verne and Philip K. Dick have written about this divination method, so ya know it’s legit!
Sold? Good. Let’s get into it!
What you’ll need
A book of your choice — bibliomancy is traditionally done with a sacred text like the Qur'an, Torah, Bible, or texts specially designed for divination, like the I Ching. However, you can use whatever appeals to you or seems apt for your question. Self-help books, career advice books, a tome of poetry, or even your fave fiction novel. Choose wisely!
A quiet place. No, not like the film (thank god).
A notebook.
A pencil.
Method
1) Ground and centre to start.
2) Take the book in your hands and ask your question. Make it as specific as possible and hold it in your mind while you allow your fingers to flip through the pages.
3) Stop your page flip when you feel the time’s right. Without looking at the pages, open the book and randomly place your pencil on the page. As with the flip, choose a spot that ‘feels right’.
4) Look down and read the passage your pencil has landed on. This is your message (for better or worse!).
5) Note down your question and answer in your notebook. I find it handy to do this so I can gauge the accuracy of my effort and refer back to the answer I got. Because ya never know!
