How's it going?
This issue of The Copy Coven is dedicated to my beloved familiar Arwen, who passed away on 27th October after almost 12 years of loyal companionship.
She would follow me around the house and chat companionably, parade across the foreground of client Zoom calls, and gatecrash YouTube videos.
Arwen was a massive part of my daily routine and — when I really think about it — an essential part of my writing practice.
I'd take regular screen breaks to stretch my legs. Make a cuppa. Go and find her for a hug and a chat.
If you're a pet owner, I'm sure you get it.
How many of you take the dog for a trot while you mull over ideas? Drag a piece of string or throw a ball for your furry friend as you move through writer's block?
You don't need a pet to benefit from good animal vibes, either. I bet you've walked off a tough job en route to feed the ducks, strolled the blue depths of an aquarium, or taken your laptop to a cat café (or that one pub with the dog).
Funny animal videos are basically an occupational hazard for freelancers.
Animals are pure souls. Their unfiltered emotions and unapologetic personalities lift our hearts. They show us how to be spontaneous. They give us joy that we pass onto others as we do our work in the world.
Plus, they're cute AF.
So your only challenge this month is to give your trusty familiar some love. If you don't have one, treat yourself to a nature walk or a cat video on YouTube.
Appreciate how much love pets bring into your day. When they're not being total jerks, of course. 🫶🏻
