Highlight Sample #2 - As Slow As Possible
Hi,
For my second highlight I’ve chosen one of Chris’ finds. He has this uncanny habit of finding these obscure art projects that really make you think, specially those concerned with time. Projects that begin now and wont be finished until long after the original artist (and the rest of us) are all gone. Looking back it was also the first time Chris asked my favourite repeated TGT question - “Is it art?”
This was a specially programmed Organ in a church in Germany that was, sorry, still is playing John Cage’s ‘As Slow As Possible’ over the course of 639 years. In February 2024, 23 years into the performance, a crowd assembled to hear the organ play a note for the first time in two years.
My tutor group were incredulous. They considered the whole endeavour pointless. But boy did they discuss it! A few days later it came up in conversation again and they were still talking about it weeks later. It had gotten into their heads. Now if that’s not the point of art, I don’t know what is!
Incidentally the next note change is in October 2027. Is that already in the TGT diary? Yes it is.
