SurviveJS - New site, conference, and research
It has been a while since the previous email. I started in a PhD program half-time at Aalto University mid-2022 and now I'm close to the finish line. That meant I had time to revamp survivejs.com. During the site rework, I built a new tool called Gustwind for myself. There's an extensive post describing the site rework in case you are interested in the details.
Research and advisory work
I have been looking at the intersection of static and dynamic websites and related techniques in my research. Beyond research, I have worked in an advisory role for quite a few students already and the quality of their work has surprised me positively. We have covered topics, such as RSC, serverless edge computing, web frameworks, Storybook.js, and specific site optimization techniques. I try to propose timely topics to my students and although they are mostly BSc-level they have been able to produce insightful results.
New conference - Future Frontend
I am a part of a group that organized React Finland from 2018 to 2022 through the pandemic. Although it would have made sense to keep going with the conference business-wise, it didn't feel like an event where we would like to participate as organizers. Due to this reason, we pivoted as Future Frontend.
We ran the first edition of Future Frontend last year and the second one takes place 13-14.6.24 at Helsinki, Finland. For this year, our main themes are artificial intelligence, web design and development. As you likely figured out by the name, we try to look at emerging topics that are shaping the industry and for this reason we have introduced blocks like green computing to our program with great success based on the feedback from the first year.
We'll stream the event and in case you are interested in participating live, I set up a discount code for the conference (-15%) for you.
What next?
I am currently in process of finishing up the last paper bits for my PhD. Now that the site revamp is done, I am also in a good position to revise the books and get them to a current state.
