Photography News from Studio MBK
News from StudioMBK!
This is a once a month (with rare exceptions) newsletter containing news about the art of photography, mine and others.
Monthly Photography Salon
I co-moderate two monthly photography Salons through the Center for Photography at Woodstock, which is now actually in Kingston, NY.
In Person Salon
Please note that we will be changing the meeting location of the Salon to CPW's new building in May. This month, we will meet at the usual location. I will supply details of the new meeting site in next month's newsletter.
Every second Tuesday of the month there is an in person salon at 7 PM at CPW, 474 Broadway, Kingston, NY. Photographers are encouraged to bring prints of their work. We are especially interested in providing feedback to photographers working on a project or submission. The atmosphere is informal and supportive, with work being reacted to and discussed by the photographers present.
Virtual Salon
Co-moderator, Deena Feinberg
Every fourth Tuesday of the month there is a virtual salon. Photographers are encouraged to upload files of their work. We recommend a jpeg format of 2000 pixels on the longest side, and maximum of 144 pixels per inch. Use highest quality jpeg setting. Files should be named with the first and last name of the photographer and should be numbered in the order in which the photographer would like them to appear. So, First Name_Last Name_01, would be the preferred format. We are especially interested in providing feedback to photographers working on a project or submission. The atmosphere is informal and supportive, with work being reacted to and discussed by the photographers present.
Files can be uploaded here.

Lunario, Guido Guidi
It's true that the moon can be a dangerous subject for photographers. I remember that Lewis Baltz once joked about the moon and landscape photographed by Ansel Adams [Moonrise, Hernandez, 1941]. But I was born in the countryside and had time to watch the moon on winter nights, on my way home from the parish youth club. It's part of my teenage memories, along with the war and other things. There wasn't much to watch then: the donkeys in the field, the trees, and the moon.
--Guido Guidi
Tomorrow there will be an eclipse of the sun by the moon. It will be 93% total where I live. 4 1/2 hours north of me it will be total. I had thought about driving north to get into the path of totality, but my weather app says it will be cloudy. It will be cloudy here too. So, we will probably stay put and enjoy the diminishment of daylight.
The pending eclipse has inspired me to revisit Guido Guidi's book Lunario, which is a photographic contemplation of the spirit of the moon. There are few actual images of the moon in it. Mostly objects and photographs that channel the idea of the moon through light and shadow, fisheye lens, distorted facial portraits. It's a wonderful book that shows how much one can do on a dangerous subject through metaphor and implication. Especially when one is dealing with a celestial object that has been symbol and dream for as long as humankind has looked up at the sky.
Here is one of my best images which I offer in the spirit of Lunario:
