This month we're featuring Josh Vidor, who designed and built a paramotor with the 6061 aluminum he got from Speedy.
He says: "I designed and fabricated this paramotor myself. A paramotor is basically a backpack airplane that can break down and be packed inside a vehicle. I can take off from any small grass field and fly up to about 10,000 ft high. My legs are the landing gear - I run and give it gas at the same time to "walk" into the sky!
"I built it entirely from 6061 T6 3/4" and 1" aluminum tubing 0.065 and 0.125 wall thickness. Purchased the materials from Speedy Metals online. It has a 28 HP Vittorazi motor mounted on it with a 125 cm carbon fiber propeller. I made the safety net by tying knots... Lots of knots (2400 to be precise) each junction is three repeat knots to prevent the string from moving.
"I TIG welded the aluminum frame with ER4043 filler rod. I used AC TIG set at 80 amps for the 0.065 wall aluminum tubing and 120 amps for the 0.125 wall. I am not a welder by trade, so this was an accomplishment for me!
"My virgin flight was on January 2nd of this year. It flies great, and thanks to the 6061 T6 aluminum it is lightweight and strong! People say the sky is the limit. I disagree. The sky is my playground now!"
