CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT
Summer is back yard bonfire season! This month, we're featuring Wanda Scholl, who used the diamond plate and steel tubing she got from Speedy to make this fire pit/grill for her brother.
She says:
"I made this for my brother’s new property in the north woods. I used 1/8" diamond steel plate, 1-1/4 of dom steel tube and square tubing. The expanded metal I had from another project. The poker is also all left over metal that I had left over from other projects."

Did You Know...? ...that we may one day be able to smelt steel in a (high tech) solar oven?
Solar ovens are great for cooking your dinner while you're camping, but producing steel, glass, and ceramics all require temperatures exceeding 1000°C. Scientists have tried for years to achieve that kind of heat with solar power with little success, maxing out at only 170°C (338°F). But now, researchers at ETH Zurich are trying something different - using semitransparent materials such as quartz to trap sunlight - a phenomenon called the thermal-trap effect: "The team crafted a thermal-trapping device by attaching a synthetic quartz rod to an opaque silicon disk as an energy absorber. When they exposed the device to an energy flux equivalent to the light coming from 136 suns, the absorber plate reached 1,050°C (1,922°F), whereas the other end of the quartz rod remained at 600°C (1,112°F)."
