CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT
This month we’re featuring a metal spun aluminum bowl by customer Rob Wallace.
He says: “I am submitting this simple project which is the result of learning a new (for me) metal forming process - metal spinning. This project is a metal spun Aluminum Bowl approx. 5.5” in diameter. The bowl was created on a woodturning lathe using “home made” metal mounts (chuck and follower), tool support/fulcrum, and spinning tools. The piece was formed from Alloy 3003 Aluminum sourced from Speedy Metals, that was flame annealed prior to spinning.”

...that scientists have figured out how to “grow” metal instead of 3D printing it?
And the results are 20x stronger.
Previous attempts at 3D printing with metal salts yielded results that were porous and warped, but researchers from the Laboratory for the Chemistry of Materials and Manufacturing have invented a new technique:
“[T]he researchers first 3D print a framework using a simple water-based gel known as a hydrogel. They then soak this “blank” structure in metal salts, which are chemically converted into tiny metal-containing nanoparticles that spread throughout the gel. Repeating this process multiple times allows them to create composites with very high metal content.”
After several cycles, the hydrogel blank is melted away, leaving a dense metal object in the exact shape of the original, 3D printed hydrogel.
