CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT This month we're featuring work by longtime Speedy Metals customer George Britnell. He submitted his latest project: a 1/3 scale, working Ford flathead engine.

model Ford engine

He says: "I have been a Speedy Metals customer for many years. My last big project was designing and building a 1/3 scale, operating Ford flathead engine. The major components are made from 6061 aluminum. The crankshaft is made from 1144 stress proof steel. The connecting rods are 4140 steel. Various components and shafting are made from 303 stainless steel. The total time for the engine including design, making drawings and building is around 2800 hours. The engine has a spark ignition triggered by a Hall transistorized distributor. I has complete water cooling through the block and heads. The engine is lubricated by an oil pump driven off of the camshaft just like the full sized engine."

DID YOU KNOW...? ...that aluminum might be the future of batteries?

Researchers at MIT have invented a new type of battery, made from inexpensive, abundant materials, that could revolutionize power storage. The battery uses alumimnum and sulfur as its electrode materials, with a molten salt in between. The molten salt is not flammable, solving one of the major problems with lithium ion batteries. An unexpected bonus discovery was that the molten salt, chosen for its low melting point, also inhibits dendritic shorting, where thin spikes of metal build up on the electrodes, and which is a common cause of battery failure.
