I’m kicking off a new shorter series. I love the poker game/bet trope and so this is my own little spin on it. I’ve got 4 chapters planned, and I’ll stay smash exclusive until the contact is finished. And heres a synopsis:

Tyler and Megan Calloway are a young couple recently displaced into a working-class neighborhood they don’t belong in. Tyler’s been losing money he can’t afford to lose. Their neighbor Vince Barella — a sleazy, tanned, dangerous-seeming man three doors down — reads their financial desperation and approaches Tyler with a proposition: bring your wife to my poker game, she pours drinks and looks good, you clean up at cards while the old guys can’t think straight. Easy money.

Tyler pitches it to Megan as a hustle — we’re the smart ones, they’re the marks. She reluctantly agrees. She’s competitive, she needs the money, and she’s been pouring drinks for distracted men since she was a bartender in college.

The reality: The men at the table are not marks. They are paying Vince for access to Megan. The poker losses are intentional. The “hustle” is a con run on the Calloways, with Megan as the product and Tyler as the unwitting delivery mechanism. The heavy pours she’s making for the “marks” are real alcohol, but the game is rigged — the men are losing on purpose because what they’re paying for isn’t at the table. It’s pouring their drinks.
