Dorothy Patterson Poetry Series
My alma mater, West Texas A&M University and the Department of English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages, has invited me to be the inaugural poet for The Dorothy Patterson Poetry Series.
I hope you’ll join us on Zoom, Wednesday, November 4, at 7:00 pm. You’ll need to register by emailing Dr. Eric Meljac as soon as possible, so he can send you the link in advance. If you’re on the fence, go ahead and register now and then you can decide later if you’d like to be enriched with an hour of poetry, or driven mad by an hour of post-election commentary. The choice is yours, friend.
Maybe you’ve never been to a poetry reading— or maybe you have and decided that you would never go to another one— but if you’ve been reading this newsletter consistently, then I’d bet that you’ll enjoy the program. I personally am excited to debut a new poem: Ulysses Arrives in Amarillo.
I’m posting a list of other works below from which my poem draws inspiration. You’ll be able to understand and enjoy the poem without knowing all these references, but I always find pleasure when I’m able to catch references. If you’re watching with a friend, you’ll be able to whisper, “He’s talking about…”
- The Odyssey, Chapter 11 - “The Dead”
- Dante’s Inferno, Canto 26 - Dante Interviews Ulysses in Hell
- Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Ulysses
- The Words of Amos
Stay safe and thank you for the company.
