Restless 26 - End of 2024
Hello.
In my last post of 2024, I shared how this year felt more stagnant compared to previous ones—less adventure, less getting out and about. But since then, I’ve been wondering if it’s actually because I’ve stayed more local, which might not be such a bad thing.
For example, I’ve spent more time exploring the Shonai River, which separates Nagoya from Kasugai, where I live. I’ve always walked or run along its paths, but this year, I paid closer attention to the wildlife there. Gradually, I’ve built up a satisfying catalog of observations on iNaturalist, which I’m quite proud of. I’m excited to continue adding to it in 2025. Yesterday I saw an osprey and a buzzard which I would never have noticed a few years ago.
Photography-wise, I exceeded my goal of shooting 12 rolls of film this year, finishing with well over 20 and I also continued working on a couple of personal projects. I managed a brief but memorable hike in the Kita Alps, revisited Hokkaido (my first summer trip there!), and made the usual journey to Australia. This year, due to time and the summer heat, I never made it into the Chuo or Minami Alps which I regret.
On a more personal note, my mother-in-law passed away in April, seven months after my father. Both losses were expected, but they’ve made me keenly aware of life’s relentless forward march. Again.
We adopted another kitten that simply refused to leave the garden. Our other cat isn’t keen but my daughter has a new best friend.
Lastly, I’ve deliberately avoided all news since the U.S. election (with the exception of Premier League football). While some might call it ignorant, it’s been a relief for my mental well-being. I have no idea what’s going on pretty much anywhere and at the moment I like it that way.
Aaaaannnnnyyyyywaaaaayyy… Here’s to finding more new adventures, staying present, and creating moments worth remembering. Stay healthy and have a great 2025.
