Questions First, Schust Later Birthday Edition!
Summer solstice cheers from Brooklyn!
Hi, Schudownists! Happy summer solstice and welcome new subscribers. Here in Brooklyn a tumultuous, humid last few days of spring have morphed into a breezy, mild first day of summer. I know it won’t last, but it’s a welcome respite.
And it’s my birthday (hence why no paywall today too).
So I thought I’d write a special birthday edition of Questions First, Schust Later as part of the celebration.
Reader: Wait. How old are you?
The Schudown: Put it this way. My parents were in line to see the Woody Allen movie “Bananas” on the Upper East Side when my mom went into labor. Apparently I was nearly a month late. I have had a lifelong problem falling asleep and staying asleep, so that might be the last time I ever overslept. Also, no one in my family has ever watched that movie and now I doubt any of us will.
R: What’s your earliest memory?
TS: Lying in my crib, wondering why I’m awake. (I’m not kidding.)
R: You are on the cusp of Gemini with Cancer. Which sign do you most identify with?
TS: I’m told “cusp” isn’t really a thing. Also, every Cancer sign baby I know is much more disciplined than I am. Hey, if I can have two Martinis, I’ll have them both.
R: What advice do you have for younger generations?
TS: Learn at least one skill you think you might never need in real life, like computer coding, defensive driving, performing a successful tracheotomy, and algebra. You never know. Also, if making art makes you happy, keep making art. Let it evolve.
R: Anything else?
TS: See above. Also, learn at least one language other than the one your native tongue. Don’t use DuoLingo.
R: How are you celebrating?
TS: I’m enjoying all the hundreds of messages and well wishes I am receiving from around the world! I’m feeling lucky to know the people I do. I’ll be having dinner tonight in my neighborhood with my parents (more luck, they are both able to make the trip and enjoy the dinner!) and my dear friend John (yet even more luck. He’s been through a lot and is taking the night off to be with us).
Sadly, my guy is not well and unable to join us as planned. He’s getting better, though. I am so grateful to medical science! He’ll be here in spirit.
Also, I voted!
R: Is Jasper helping in any way?
TS: Last night he hunted down a giant cockroach. Got rid of it before I would have stepped on it this morning. Bless.
R: You share a birthday with one of your idols, right?
TS: Happy birthday, John Taylor (Duran Duran)! Knock ‘em dead in Milan tonight! Wish I could be there.

A birthday greeting from JT 🎉🎉 Play the ______ bass John!!!!
R: What will you be sipping?
TS: Honestly, there have been a lot of cocktails in my life past couple of weeks. I am looking forward to relaxing with some wine this weekend!
Cheers, all! I’m going to re-publish my preserved cherries recipe next few days. Stay tuned!
Happy Birthday, Amanda! Let us know where you went to dinner!!
Thanks! We're going to Gus' (although sadly we missed Sother).
