I could have been someone
It’s Christmas if you’re into that kind of thing.
If not, happy second anniversary of the time I drunk purchased multiple stuffed bears dressed as professional wrestlers, a towel that features Tetsuya Naito sultrily sprawled across it, and t-shirt that was officially named the “Hiromu Inside You” shirt in the middle of visiting Aaron’s family.
Song of the Week: “The Cat Carol” by Meryn Cadell
I can’t decide if an absolutely devastating ballad about a dying cat who saves a dying mouse on Christmas Eve is the best or worst possible song to be listening to this particular Christmas. Definitely don’t listen to it if you can’t handle animals suffering in stories. I’ve been familiar with this song for a good quarter of a century, and I cried my tits off listening to it again today. And then spent like fifteen minutes making sure my cat was breathing and warm enough in her multiple layers of fuzzy blankets.
So yeah. Happy holidays. Sometimes we hang on by the grace of people who can’t hang on themselves, but they’re always with us somehow.
If that’s too heavy, Cadell’s other classic has a happy ending. It’s about a piece of winter apparel, so it’s seasonally appropriate.
Movie of the Week: The Silent Partner (1978)
If that’s still not your speed, you could always watch Elliott Gould engage in a psychosexual mind game triangle with a mysterious woman and a bank-robbing mall Santa in a bunch of Toronto landmarks that are either gone or unrecognizable today.
Bonus: one of the kids who briefly appears in this film went on to form a little Canadian band called Sloan.
