Avi Epstein went off to college and unfortunately the dorms didn’t allow pets so he had to leave his beloved dog Nudnik back at home with his parents. He loved that dog more than life itself so it was difficult for him but he promised to call home and check on Nudnik every chance he could. As soon as he arrived and got set up in his dorm he called his father. “How’s Nudnik?” Avi asked.

“Your dog is dead,” his father replied.

"Oh no!" Avi exclaimed. "Dad, why did you have to tell me that way?"

"How else can I tell you your dog’s dead?" inquired his father.

"You should have led me up to it gradually," said David. "For an example, when I called tonight you could have told me Nudnik was stuck on the roof, but the Fire Department is getting him down. When I called tomorrow night, you could have told me that they dropped him and broke his back, but a fine surgeon is doing all he can for him. Then, when I called the third night, you could have told me the surgeon did all he could but my dog passed away. That way it wouldn't have been such a shock."

"By the way," Avi continued, "how's Bubbie?"

"Bubbie?"his father answered. "Oh, she's stuck on the roof...”
