SAIL: Online conference, Twitter, Generative AI
Hi all,
Have I mentioned we have an absolutely outstanding program for our free online Empowering Learners for the Age of AI conference in ~3 weeks?
The links included this week are more adjacent, than specific, to education than usual, but all address trends that will influence education, importantly: generative AI. The focus here has been on videos and images, but essay writing and the challenges of plagiarism detection will be increasingly important.
Ethics
Currently, there is great confusion, schadenfreude, frustration, and angst with Twitter as it is under new ownership. Of interest to AI researchers is the dismantling of the Twitter ethical AI team.
That leads to a follow up problem - those who focus on responsible AI are burning out.
Integration
Value from technology comes from integration - when the outputs of one system/platform generate value in another. Consider this integration of DALL-E 2 with Shutterstock. Similarly, as big tech (Google has my bet currently) develops effective tutors and interaction agents, higher education will be a promising integration point. Integration isn't always welcomed and presents security and ethics issues.
Generative AI
AI is an active creator - from a few words, an image is generated. Or a video. What's coming next? shares views from prominent theorists, including the development of "multimodal" AI, armed with data from multiple senses. Generative AI is attracting big interest and money. But don't expect generative AI to lead to artificial general intelligence.
