SAIL: Beingness, USA AI Innovation Ecosystem, Psychology
Hi all, welcome to Sensemaking, AI, and Learning - a weekly newsletter about things related to AI in educational settings.
Since November 2022, most of us have attended dozens of workshops and webinars on AI. Our literacy (and language) about LLMs and generative AI has evolved and we're turning more to asking difficult questions about ethics and impact. One unresolved question, and may be the defining one shaping education, is around "what and how should we teach in an age of AI?" I've shared a few thoughts here: Beingness: From epistemology to ontology, in preparation for our upcoming webinar on this topic, register here: Cognitive Escalation.
Education and AI
Teachers are using ChatGPT more than students: "ChatGPT is just another example of why we can’t keep doing things the old way"
End of the English Major? "Technology in the last twenty years has changed all of us"
GPTeach "an interactive chat-based teacher training tool that allows teachers to practice with simulated students."
AI and Research. There are a growing range of tools for academics and students that will help increase their productivity and work quality. I've been playing with Iris.AI, Lateral, Research Rabbit, and Connected Papers. It's a new world.
We are in the midst of the greatest acceleration of intelligence in humanity's history. The impact is already started. Consider these papers on productivity impact of generative AI on writing and coding.
General AI
Prompt Engineering. This is worth a look. Prompts are how we interact with LLMs. There are ways and approaches of making this engagement more productive and intentional.
AI incident database: "The AI Incident Database is dedicated to indexing the collective history of harms or near harms realized in the real world by the deployment of artificial intelligence systems."
Microsoft will be all AI. Based on several conversations with people in Microsoft, you can expect AI in PowerPoint, Word. Create a paper with a prompt. A presentation/images with a few guiding statements. Of course, it will need human editing.
Strengthening and Democratizing the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Innovation Ecosystem Significant insight into what will be an organization of broad impact in USA and beyond
Understanding AI
Probing AI models "researchers should apply methods from cognitive psychology to gain insights into LLMs"
Copyright and AI. This is a topic that is increasingly coming up in conversations. Who owns what AI produces? "Do we want to build a society which champions lack of consent as a virtue? Where consent must be foregone to achieve progress? Where personal (and state sovereignty) are decried as a rebuke of modernity?"
Impact of AI
Journalists could be replaced by AI "job cuts lay ahead, because automation and AI were increasingly making many of the jobs that supported the production of their journalism redundant." This is an example that educators can learn from: we need to find new points of value in the system.
