T. REX TRUE/FALSE QUIZ
So you think you know a fair bit about the tyrant king of the dinosaurs? True or false:
Evidence suggests that T. rex could swim well.
I’ll put the answer in my next newsletter. If you need to know now, there’s always the Internet. For a more reliable, accessible, and visually stunning source of the latest scientific thinking about dinosaurs, check out Prehistoric Planet on Apple+, starring David Attenborough.
WHERE CAN YOU SEE ME?
I’m on a new Go Indie Now panel with other writers talking about how we write the character best described as the “romantic interest.” Here’s a secret: It helps to treat all characters as fully formed heroes of their own stories. Also, as society's expectations regarding appropriate roles for men and women continue to change, readers and writers are less likely to put up with a stereotypical love interest serving only to motivate the hero to seek revenge against the villain or to serve as a reward once the hero saves the day.

WHAT AM I WRITING?
I’m still working on the sequel to “The Next Frontier,” which is running rather longer than I had expected. This is the story in which I added a woman astronaut to the Apollo program. I’m also happy to announce that “The Next Frontier” placed 4th in the AnLab Readers’ Award poll. I’m thrilled that a lot of readers thought well of my alternate history tale about a Soviet-era cosmonaut defecting to the U.S. and ending up in NASA. It’s a lot of fun to explore what she does after “The Next Frontier” ends.
WHAT ARE YOU READING THIS SUMMER?
I’m hoping a lot of you will find time this summer to kick back with a good book, or at the least, some nice short stories. Novels always seem to get all the attention, but with people running around so busily, it seems to me that short stories are tailor-made to read while waiting for appointments or commuting and to listen to while walking the dog or exercising.
Until next time…
