Longest, darkest night right here, right now

Hello, Readers All,

Welcome to the shortest day of the year. If it makes you feel any better, sunrise this morning in Akureyri, Iceland was around noon and sunset was at a quarter to three in the afternoon. That cheered me up immensely. I hope it helped.

To celebrate me being all cheerful about having nine hours of daylight instead of three, let's get right up in someone's face.

It’s INTACT (language matters)

Settling down a bit, here's what happened last week when AleXander's and my cellphones decided not to talk to each other for about four hours. It could have been worse.

When both cell phones go AWOL

Here's one of those stories I started thinking I was writing about one thing and then the gods reached down and that story turned into something else entirely. The story it was meant to be, undoubtedly, but still surprising.

Because crying is…bad?

For my fictional offering of the week I'm going way back to my first "good" short story. I submitted it as the final in my short story writing class at Case Western Reserve and the PEN/Hemingway finalist teaching the class, Steve Lattimore, wrote on the last page: "You will be a publishing writer. I guarantee it." Thanks, Steve, you were right!

Opalene Lewis stared out the window of the bus through the sleet. She ached with homesickness even as she recognized her own narrow escape…

AleXander is doing his annual movies and music rundowns this time of year. Here's Music: 20 + 2 in 2020. You're going to find something you like in here.

I do need to shout out to a particularly wonderful subscriber, Daniella Mini, for her awesome Medium piece about how to end your newsletter. In case you're wondering, wonder no more:

How to End a Newsletter Email Using the Two Basic Closings | by Dani Mini | Better Marketing

And why these closings work

(I hope you're ok with me doing this, Daniella, I didn't ask permission or anything!)

And there we are. Another week of brain-pickings for your entertainment (I hope). I love having this weekly accountability maven with her ruler at the ready in case I don't get at least three new pieces published. And here you are, reading and even dropping some coins into the hat by the door. I must be doing something right.

A thousand humble thank yous. I started this newsletter because all the "experts" said compiling an email list is Capital Letter "I" Important. That may be so, but what's much more important is knowing that eyes are on the work. You keep me at it and for that I am in your debt.

Until next week, keep the insincere flattery and deadly serious accusations coming to: Remington.write@gmail.com
