which wins do we celebrate?

first day of shooting Best Friends Forever :0

If you’re following me on IG then you know I am truly so thrilled to be cast in this horror movie. I’ve made it a goal to get better at my auditions in the last year and I think it maybe paid off? So I’m really proud of myself!

Getting this movie gave me validation. Which is so cool, but also SO SPOOKY? Because this industry is TOXIC about validation. You never know when you’re gonna get it, and you never know WHY you’re gonna get it. And, importantly, I’d be no less of a performer if I didn’t get it. So that begs the question: what wins am I celebrating? External ones only? Or internal ones, too? Which ones “matter?”

I always try to remind myself about celebrating wins because I think I very misguidedly grew up to think I should and could only celebrate external, obvious wins, and even then the celebration should be very minimal, because there’s still more ground to cover, more things to accomplish. But as I get farther into this industry, I realize that you simply HAVE to celebrate small wins. So I’ve been doing a thing recently where whenever I grab a coffee somewhere that looks like it has good pastries, I grab a pastry not even for that moment, but to put in my freezer and eat when I want a little celebration (this is also partly because no bakeries are open past 3p and I always want my treats at night). This has been a nice little ritual in the past month when employment has been sparse and the need to celebrate ANYTHING has been VERY VERY HIGH.

carrot cake w/ black sesame frosting from Proof Bakery
blurry chocolate rye loaf from Tartine

Do YOU have a way to celebrate your wins, big and small? And do YOU also take blurry pictures?

xo,
Rekha
