Now, to begin the cute stuff.
Younger Rekha thought she’d be in a band (despite playing 0 instruments), be named Samantha (Idk how), and be an artist, but only the kind who makes money painting (404 ERROR).
But I imagine if I could tell her what I’m actually up to, it would go something like this:
Rekha: “Hey!”
Younger Rekha does not pay attention and makes pieces of pie out of clay for her dolls to eat.
Rekha: “Rekha, hi, it’s me: Adult You. We’re going to make a movie.”
Younger Rekha: “HOTJAMBALAYA!”
Rekha: “Sure, Mrs. Doubtfire. It’s kind of like that, but it’s a sci-fi comedy about Hinduism.”
Younger Rekha: “Do I hav to go to tumple? Tumple is two howrs away and is boreing.”
Rekha: “I actually explore why Temple is confusing for you in this movie!”
Younger Rekha: “HOw do you make a moovy?”
Rekha: “You have to have a script and a team.”
Younger Rekha: “How much does it cost?” (She can say and spell this perfectly.)
Rekha: “An ultra low-budget movie still costs over a million dollars.”
Younger Rekha starts crying.
Rekha: “It’s okay! Do you know who the movie is about?”
Younger Rekha: “Lola Bunny?! I want to kis Bugs.”
Rekha: “No. It’s about Thatha.”
Younger Rekha: “THATHA! I LOVE Thatha and Paati. Look!”
Rekha: “That’s exactly why I’m making this movie!”
Younger Rekha: “Yay!”
Younger Rekha returns to her Ken doll with its two missing legs that her mom will soon throw in the trash because “it’s lewd that it can’t wear pants anymore.”
Rekha: “Rekha, here’s some advice: don’t let other people’s way of doing things scare you. You are always gonna have to find your own way. You may not get INTO the school play, you will have to MAKE a school play. You see what I’m saying?”
Younger Rekha: “Meaghan’s dog drawings are VEARY good but I have to figure out a different way to do a VEARY good dog drawing.”
Rekha: “PERFECT COMP.”
Younger Rekha: “Why do I make a moovy about Hinduism and Thatha?”
Rekha thinks about explaining what losing Thatha has felt like, and how it fractured her understanding of her culture, but instead tells Younger Rekha: “Because it’s something I’d want to watch.”
I don’t think my younger self would necessarily be proud that I’m making a movie (because she has no idea what it means outside of watching a Mrs. Doubtfire VHS everyday). But I think she would be happy to know she’s an artist :D
Folks, I'm so close to having more news for you about this movie! You can't even believe it.
A weird question BUT you’ve all been so sweet about wanting to support this project… Are you the kind of person who has $500 to give to a project like this, to kick off our funding? It'll be like, you give us $500, BUT through the magic of momentum it means you've actually given us like $1,500 and you're insanely hot!
If that might be you, please reply to this email with the words "I wanna be an anchor donor" and I will send you some SECRETS! About where that money will go, about the movie, about creative BTS… Being an anchor donor is such a kind gesture I really want you to feel a part of this thing!
