The First Time I Wrote a Sketch
The first time I wrote a sketch I felt nothing?
People assume writing gives you some big “finished” feeling after because you “got something off your chest.” And that CAN happen, but when I JUST start a new skill, including when I started writing, I was more like “hm,” rather than, “My life’s calling has been met.” Cuz the great thing about being a novice is you kind of get that pure, living-in-the-present feeling, where you’re just curious and hungry to get good.
ALL THAT SAID, to me, what feels like something is when you go and film the thing.
This is not the first sketch I wrote but it’s the first one I made. It was super fun to grab a camera (which was lent to me by WILDLY SUCCESSFUL director Anu Valia, who back then was my WILDLY TALENTED college classmate), film with friends, and then play around with it in the edit.
As you may know, I recently wrote a movie script, and while I hope you DEEPLY RELATE TO A STORY ABOUT GRANDPARENTS AND FEELING DUMB ABOUT YOUR FAMILY’S CULTURE, I think my BIG satisfaction will come from filming it. I want to get back to that novice mindset where you’re okay making mistakes and trying weird shit.
We’re going to have to fake a Hindu Rapture where people are getting sucked up into the ceiling for this movie. I am pumped to brainstorm how. Do you have some spare wires I can use?
Additionally, Los Angeles has hit extremely difficult times this past week. If you would like to donate or volunteer, here are some organizations I love:
Take care, and be safe all.
