Dial-a-song
I love They Might Be Giants, and in fact, they are one of the only bands I’ve seen live more than once.
One of the things I love most about them is a way they used to get new songs out there called Dial-a-song, where they’d record a track onto a cassette tape and use that tape as the outgoing message for an answering machine. So anyone with the Dial-a-song number could call in and hear this song. They started this while they were on a hiatus and man, what a cool way to hear a band’s music if you can’t see them live.
I think a lot about Dial-a-song in terms of how currently I consume art / people consume my art. I am not a TikTokker, I post on IG but not in the “here’s a new sketch every week” kind of way… because none of that fits me. But if I could create some sort of cool scavenger hunt around LA, or put up fake signage to a fake website to a fake product that maybe has a sketch attached to it, THAT feels like me. I just have to find what my version of Dial-a-song is. And I think it would be fun to use my movie and how I want to market it as a way to explore that.
What’s the most fun, unusual thing you’ve seen your favorite artist do? And is he a dot or is he a speck?
