❤️ You're Not Lazy (and 4 other writing truths to remember)
oooh, these are the writing truths I find most comforting of all!
Before I get into the 5 truths about writing that no one ever believes, this is your last call for Write More, Worry Less! Click that link for more!
Dear writer,
So, the thing about truths we learn the hard way is that we, uh, kind of knew them already. You know?
I’m never truly shocked by these facts. I’m just surprised I’ve forgotten them again.
In case you need a loving reminder, here are five of my favorite writing truths:
You’re not lazy.
If you’re not writing as much as you want to, the club you are joining is so big it holds all writers who have every lived. None of us are writing as much as we want to be. (Also, truly lazy people don’t actually mind being lazy. So if you’re feeling lazy, congratulations. You’re not.) (Also #2 - it’s okay to be heartily lazy, too. Sometimes it’s necessary. In those cases, choose to laze and lean all the way in.)
The voice in your head that says you’re not ready is wrong.
That voice just wants to keep you safe. It says the same thing to all of us. Counterintuitively (and very comfortingly) it’s a sure sign that you’re a writer who is ready. You already have everything you need.
Your past “failures” to produce the writing you swore you would aren’t actually failures.
Every single writer makes goals they don’t hit. I literally do it every single week (also, most days). These “failures” are actually stepping stones we take on our writing journey. They’re necessary. Good job!
You don’t need more time, inspiration, knowledge, or confidence to do your writing.
This is an important one. You’ll never, ever feel like you have enough of these things. Those things, instead, come only when you DO the writing.
It’s not too late.
Everyone thinks they are. I (no lie) know a 25-year-old who thinks she’s late to publishing 😂. I also know a 78-year-old memoirist who just held her first bookshop signing, who just got her first piece of fan mail.
You’re right on time. For YOU.
The only thing you need to do is to keep writing one (clunky, scrappy) sentence at a time.
That’s all any of us do.
Onward!
❤️ Rachael
