Happy Valentine’s Day to the lovers and the haters alike. How can it be that the last RADIOLIO Megamix dropped late last summer… A five and a half month hiatus… I would apologize but there’s been plenty going on in the world that’s demanded my attention, and yours, too.
I started working on this mix as I was wrapping up RACK FOCUS. Because of that one’s narrow scope, I had a lot of loosies rattling around and began gathering them. The title for this mix comes from the chorus of Caroline Polachek’s “Starburned and Unkissed,” which was released as part of the I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack. (I was going to start writing about my thoughts on the film and then remembered I’d already done that.)
The state of the union is bad. I know it, you know it; we hear the fear of/for our years ahead as, well, a kettle’s shrill whistle in the background of our days. Each person’s proximity is different but the high whine can and does collapse space and time.
I wish I had more to say besides, Some things can’t be talked about. They simply must be done. So do what you can with the tools that you have. And pay attention to the whistle—where it’s going and how it gets there.
The Spotify playlist is missing Track 85, Mifu’s “Brilla brilla piccola stella. ☆.” The YouTube Music playlist is missing both that and Track 61, Joshua Chuquimia Crampton’s “♥︎Profundo Amor♡ ~jach’a munasiña~ (sicureada).” The playlists work…fine…without them… I technically have the ability to send the full playlist through ****** ways but if I go that route in the future, it’ll have to be extremely DL and, I don’t know how many of y’all still download and upload your own music but if you do, good for you.
A remix of Saint Etienne’s “How We Used To Live” (by Paul Van Dyk no less) appeared on RACK FOCUS; the original is Track 104 on this mix.
Two of my best friends are releasing music under the band name A VIOLET IN YOUTH; their song “Green” is Track 31. You’re gonna want to listen to their EP on Spotify and follow them on Instagram so you can say “I was there at the beginning” when they blow up >:) Also Dani: get on Bandcamp!
Track 2, Luna’s “Bonnie and Clyde” cover (Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin did the original) features Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier on the female vox.
I learned about Track 18, Ivy’s “Edge of the Ocean,” because it was sampled on Omar Apollo’s track “Drifting,” which is the only track I really liked off his album God Said No.
A few good back to back queues if I do say so myself. My favorite is probably Track 49 going into Track 50: Addison Rae’s “Aquamarine” into Saint Etienne’s “Lightning Strikes Twice.”
Thanks for "listening." Stay tuned...!
♬ xoxo Lio
