QM Weekly Update for April 27, 2026

  • 🏳️‍⚧️⚕️⚖️ On April 18th, a federal judge struck down a declaration by the Secretary of Health and Human Services which threatened to potentially withhold federal funding from any healthcare provider offering gender-affirming care to trans youth, ruling that the declaration overstepped federal authority and violated rulemaking procedures. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the decision.

  • 🏳️‍⚧️⚖️ On April 17th, a federal appeals court overturned a lower court’s temporary block against the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ policy requiring trans women inmates to be moved to men’s prisons, allowing the policy to go into effect. Trans women will now be required to argue on an individual basis that being housed in a men’s prison would put them in danger.

    • 🏳️‍⚧️🏫⚖️ On April 20th, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case brought by two parents who had sued their school district for accommodating their child’s preferred name and pronouns without outing them to the parents, allowing a lower court ruling against the parents’ case to stand.

    • 🏳️‍⚧️🏫 On Tuesday, the athletic director of Monroe Public Schools in southeast Michigan was reinstated, after having been put on leave for four months for publicly expressing empathy during an interview for an allegedly trans student athlete in Michigan who was facing vitriol from media and state politicians.

    • 🏳️‍🌈🏫⚖️ On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that they will hear a case brought by a group of Catholic preschools seeking an exemption from Colorado's state-funded universal preschool program nondiscrimination policies, which require participating schools to enroll all children regardless of the LGBTQ+ status of students or their parents.
