Wish Aloft
Jaipur, Rajasthan ยท street
A sky lantern climbs into the dusk, its warm glow a counterpoint to the cooling sky. Every lantern carries a wish โ released, rising, dissolving into darkness.
On festival nights in Jaipur, the sky fills with paper lanterns drifting upward like slow-motion fireworks. Each one is launched by a family or a group of friends, held at arm's length while the fuel cell heats the air inside, then released with a small cheer when it finally lifts.
This lantern was just seconds into its flight, still close enough to glow against the amber sky but already high enough to be free of the rooftops. The silhouette of a tree anchored the bottom of the frame while the lantern drifted up and right. There's something deeply human about releasing a light into the sky and watching it go โ the wish becomes physical, visible, shared. I watched this one until it was a pinprick among the stars, indistinguishable from them. That's when you know the wish has been accepted.
