Twilight Crossing
Himalayan Foothills, India · landscape
A wide river in the Himalayan foothills holds the last pink of the day in its mirror. The far bank rises in dark trees and bare branches against a softening sky.
Spring evenings in the Himalayan foothills move quickly. The light loses its warmth within minutes of the sun dropping behind the ridges, and what's left is a brief window of pink-grey twilight where the sky and the water look almost the same colour. If you're lucky, the wind drops at the same time.
This evening was lucky. The river was wide and shallow, the kind that fans out across a stone bed before narrowing again, and the centre channel was just deep enough to hold a clean reflection. The hills behind were the colour of old bruises — purple-grey at the base, fading to nothing at the top. I framed the shot to leave most of the picture as water and sky, with the dark ribbon of bank between them. There was no one else around. There rarely is, at this hour, in places like this.
