Tree Over Water

Tree Over Water

Coastal India · landscape

A sea-grape tree leans far out over a pale tropical beach, its lower branches almost touching the wet sand. The sea is so calm it has stopped being a horizon.

Sea grapes — Coccoloba uvifera — grow along the high-tide line of tropical beaches everywhere, holding the dunes together with shallow root systems and bending themselves in the direction of the prevailing wind. Older trees often grow more horizontally than vertically, with main trunks angling almost flat across the beach, as if reaching for some specific point on the water.

This one had been leaning long enough that its lowest branches were dragging in the wet sand. The tide was at its lowest, the water flat as glass, the colour of weak tea where it met the shore. I framed the shot to let the tree consume two-thirds of the frame, with just enough sea showing in the bottom-left to register that we were on a beach. There's something about an old leaning tree that anchors any landscape — a sense of accumulated time, of slow choices made in response to wind and salt. The picture is really a portrait. The sea is only in it because the tree needs it.
