The Watchers

The Watchers

Rajasthan, India · nature

Dark birds perched on a tangle of bare branches above the grass, watching for movement. The quiet alertness of a hunting pause.

Birds of prey and their cousins know how to wait better than any other animal I've photographed. They settle on a branch in good light, square their shoulders, and become almost completely still — only the head turns, in small precise movements, scanning the grass below. They will hold that pose for an hour at a time if the wind is right.

This tangle of branches was the last piece of usable cover at the edge of a dry pasture, and half a dozen birds had divided it up among themselves. None of them moved while I was there. I shot quickly because I didn't trust the moment to last, then walked away the way you walk away from a meditation hall — slowly, quietly, hoping not to be the reason the silence ends. Twenty minutes later, when I looked back from down the path, they were still there. Still watching.
