The Tail Unfurled

The Tail Unfurled

India · nature

A peacock fans its full train in dappled scrub, the eyespots arranged in a perfect arc. Seen from behind — all extravagance, no audience.

Peacocks display the train mostly to impress peahens, but anyone who has watched them long enough knows they'll fan their feathers for almost anything — a passing dog, their own reflection, the sound of an approaching vehicle. The display is enormous. A full train can carry over a hundred eyespots, fanned out into a half-circle that sometimes shimmers as the bird shivers the feathers in a slow vibration.

I came around a low scrub bank one afternoon and found this one mid-display, facing away from me. From behind, you see something photographers rarely shoot — the architecture of the train itself, the way each feather slots into the next, the curve of bronze and green hidden behind the dazzle of the eyespots. The peacock did not turn. He had his audience elsewhere. I had three seconds, maybe four, before he folded the whole thing back into nothing and walked off into the brush.
