A single sea stack rises from a wide expanse of cool blue water. Almost nothing else in the frame — just texture, salt, and patience.
Sea stacks are what's left when softer rock erodes away around a tougher core. They tend to outlive the cliff they were once part of by hundreds of thousands of years, and stand offshore as a kind of geological tombstone for the coastline that used to be. On the west coast of India, you find them scattered along stretches where the basalt cliffs are slowly retreating into the Arabian Sea.
I shot this from a high path on the cliff above, looking down at maybe a 45-degree angle. The water filled almost the entire frame — silvery-blue, slightly textured by the breeze, paler towards the horizon. The stack sat off to the right, with a small line of white water marking the current that breaks against its base. I cropped tight to leave nothing but the stone and the sea. There is a kind of photograph that asks the viewer to slow down. This is one of them. It rewards the patience it demands.
