The Patience of Pines

The dense, scaled fronds of a Norfolk Island pine — every needle a small puzzle piece in an old design.

Norfolk Island pines aren't actually pines, and they don't come from anywhere near India. But they grow well in hill stations and old gardens and they have one of the most photogenic foliage patterns of any conifer — densely packed scales, perfectly symmetrical fronds, the whole tree looking like it was assembled rather than grown.

This branch was at eye level on a tree that probably remembers a colonial-era gardener. I got close because I wanted to lose the tree itself and let the foliage become its own landscape — ridges and valleys of green, miniature mountains made of leaves. Up close, every needle has its place in a pattern that took the tree decades to construct. There are species of patience humans don't have access to.
