A mugger crocodile hauled out on the green bank of a quiet reservoir, jaw slightly open, the unmistakable smile of an animal that has nothing to prove.
Mugger crocodiles — Crocodylus palustris — are the freshwater crocodiles of the subcontinent, smaller and broader-snouted than the saltwater species, and entirely capable of looking benign when they want to. The jaw-open posture you see on basking individuals is a thermoregulation move: it vents heat from the mouth while the body absorbs sun. The smile is not a smile. The smile is air-conditioning.
This one had hauled itself onto the soft green bank of a reservoir in central India and was lying half on grass, half on warm sandstone. Two small white birds had perched on the partly-submerged rocks behind, oblivious or trusting, take your pick. I shot from the bank above, far enough not to register as a problem. Muggers are patient. They will hold this kind of stillness for hours at a time. The photograph is essentially a small bargain with that patience — you stay quiet long enough to take the picture; the animal stays quiet long enough for the picture to be worth taking.
