The Lake at the End of Light
Central India · landscape
A wide central-Indian lake at the end of the day, a corridor of sun glittering across the water, the broken stone bank in the foreground stepping down into low scrub.
There's a particular kind of light at the very end of an Indian afternoon that the locals call kachhi roshni — the unripe light — soft enough that it doesn't quite cast a shadow, warm enough that the world seems to be remembering rather than seeing. This was that hour. The lake had gone almost silver under it, the far hills had given up to amber, and the broken stone bank in the foreground was holding the last bit of contrast in the frame.
I had been walking the shoreline for an hour without taking anything. Then this composition arranged itself — the curve of the bank leading the eye in from the left, the column of bright water cutting through the centre, the soft cliff and trees on the far side stepping back into haze. I shot from a slight elevation, with the rocks just below my feet doing the work of the foreground. Some pictures you spend all day looking for. This one waited until I had almost given up, and then asked to be taken.
