The Far Peak

The Far Peak

Himalayan Foothills, India · landscape

A snow-dusted peak holds its place against a churning sky. The Himalayas behaving like the Himalayas — weather assembling and dispersing in real time.

The Himalayas have weather of their own that doesn't ask permission. You watch a cloudless morning turn into an afternoon of dense overcast in about twenty minutes, and then you watch it clear back to blue just as fast. The peaks come and go behind the clouds like they're using a door.

This one was still showing a patch of last winter's snow even in summer, the ridge curving down on either side. I waited for a window in the cloud, took the shot, and watched the peak disappear again within a minute. By the time I'd packed the camera, the entire mountain was gone. Photographing in the high country is mostly about being patient enough to be there when the curtain opens for the half-second it does.
