A single boulder sits in the centre of a shallow Himalayan river, its reflection rippling against a far bank of green forest. The kind of quiet that doesn't need a camera.
The rivers that come down from the lower Himalayas carry so much debris over a season that by spring they look more like beaches than waterways — wide stone shelves with shallow streams winding between them. The water is still cold this far up, glass-clear, and you can hear it moving even when you can't see it.
This boulder was probably carried down in some flood years ago and stranded here when the water dropped. Now it sits with its toes in the river and a small reflection trailing behind it. I framed the shot to leave the boulder centred but slightly off — not quite a bullseye — and waited for the surface to settle. There is nothing else in the picture. Just stone, water, and the dark green wall of the far bank. Some compositions arrange themselves and ask you not to interfere.
