A tree silhouetted against a sky exploding with sun rays and cumulus. The kind of weather you only get in the foothills before a change in season.
Pre-monsoon afternoons in the lower Himalayas tend to be operatic. The land is still dry, the air full of dust, and then a single cloud bank will roll up from the plains and stage a complete production of itself — light, shadow, rays, the whole choreography of cumulus build-up. By evening it has often dissipated, and the rain doesn't actually arrive for another week.
This tree was perched at the edge of a slope, leaning slightly away from the wind. The sun was behind it and just behind the cloud, throwing visible rays out around the silhouette. The dark ridge in the bottom right anchors the frame and gives the sky something to push against. There's something about cloud-and-sun-and-silhouette compositions that feels almost too easy — but when the elements line up like this, you just have to take the picture and step out of the way.
