River, Hills, Last Light

River, Hills, Last Light

Himalayan Foothills, India · landscape

A wide foothills river bends past a stone bank as the daylight fades behind the ridges. The light is almost gone but the water is still bright.

Spring rivers in the Himalayan foothills are quieter than people expect. The big monsoon flows are months away, and by April-May the channels have narrowed to a single thread between wide stone banks of rounded grey cobbles. The water is still cold and still clear, but most of the riverbed is exposed, and the whole valley feels like it's been emptied out and is waiting.

This bend caught the last useful light of the day. The hills behind had already lost their warmth, gone to that flat blue-grey of dusk. The water held a faint metallic shine where the sky reflected. A small post and signboard sit at the bottom right of the frame, anchoring the scale. I shot wide to leave most of the frame as sky — there's nothing to do with foothill twilight except give it room. Rivers in the Indian Himalayas are not photogenic in the way Alpine rivers are. They're slower, more thoughtful, and they reward a slower kind of looking.
