Pink Under Green

Pink Under Green

India · nature

A double pink hibiscus hanging beneath an oversized green leaf, the leaf shading the bloom from above like an umbrella.

Indian hibiscus comes in two main moods — the single, five-petalled type that has been a temple offering for two thousand years, and the more elaborate double form, with overlapping ruffled petals stacked in dense rosettes. This was the second kind, hanging beneath a hibiscus leaf so large it acted as a small parasol over the bloom.

I shot from just under the leaf, angling the camera up so the flower sat in shadow against the brighter, sunlit underside of the green. The petals had that crinkled quality double hibiscus always carries — slightly papery, slightly worn, as if the flower had stopped trying to be neat and had committed instead to being abundant. There's a saying I've heard in temple gardens: 'the hibiscus opens for one day, and that is enough.' Each bloom lasts a single afternoon, then the plant produces another, and another, all summer long. The arithmetic of the flower is generosity divided by ego.
