A red hibiscus held in an open palm — the veining picked out in fine pale lines, the centre dark and small. A flower meant for a temple, paused.
Hibiscus blooms are temple flowers in much of India. People gather them off bushes on the way to the morning puja, carry them carefully in cupped hands, and offer them at the deity's feet. The flower lasts a day, which is part of the point — fresh, given, gone.
This one had been picked but not yet placed. I asked the woman holding it if I could photograph the bloom, and she opened her hand and waited. The veining on a hibiscus petal is extraordinary up close — fine pale lines radiating from the centre like the spokes of a small wheel. The fingerprints around the edges of the frame, the lines on the palm, the soft folds of the petal where it had been held — all of them together made a picture about how small the gestures of devotion can be, and how complete.
