Palm in Storm Light

Palm in Storm Light

Coastal India · landscape

A coconut palm leans into a sky gone deep blue and slate-grey, fronds raking against the storm light. No horizon, no ground — just leaves and weather.

Coconut palms before a monsoon storm look different from coconut palms on a calm day. The fronds, normally relaxed into a green halo, get stiffer in the rising wind, individual leaflets standing more vertically, the whole crown angling itself slightly into the gust. The light goes blue and metallic. The whole tree seems to be listening to something the rest of the landscape hasn't heard yet.

This was that moment. The sky behind the palm had darkened to slate, broken by a few pale clouds that had not yet been overrun. The fronds in the foreground caught a fragmentary highlight along their upper edges. There is no ground in the frame, no horizon, no other tree — just the leaves against the weather. I shot it almost a silhouette, with just enough exposure to keep the texture of the fronds visible. Coastal storms in India arrive faster than you think. By the time I had walked back to the room, the rain had started, and the picture had become the only thing left of the calm before it.
