On a Curling Stem

On a Curling Stem

India · nature

A small pink flower opens at the end of a curling green stem, with two tight buds dangling below. The whole image is built around a single arc.

Some flowers are about colour and density — beds of marigold or bougainvillea cascading down a wall — and some are about a single perfect example surrounded by air. This one is the second kind. A small five-petalled pink flower had opened at the end of a slender stem that curled back on itself in a single elegant arc, with two unopened buds dangling below.

I shot with the longest macro setting I had, framing the curl of the stem as the main element and letting the background go soft. The pale leaves behind dissolved into a kind of cream wash; the stem itself caught a thin line of light along its top edge. There is a category of small Indian wildflowers that look like they were designed for botanical illustrations rather than for any practical purpose. They produce one flower at a time, in muted colours, on impossibly slender stems. The pollinators they attract are probably equally subtle. The whole thing is conducted in a register so quiet that most people walk straight past it.
